I have been diabetic for 30 yrs and want to get the pump, I have my diabetes under good control and want to get it, does anyone know what all is involved and how much it costs?

Does insurance usually pay for it?
How do they insert it, and how often do you have to get it checked by a doctor?

Do they have to change it often?

I am a diabetic for about 10 years less, and I do not have a pump but do live in PA. Since you do not give us your exact location in PA–if you are close to Pittsburgh- go to a big institution out there–close to Phila–go there– close to Harrisburg- go to Hershey–close to the east near Jersey– go to Princeton or NYCity. Obviously you do have an MD that has been treating you this long and I guess, like a lot of us, we are not quite satisfied with how they treat us 20-30 years into the disease– they usually become lax, where it is more important to become more stringent that far into the disease. I would like to make a suggestion to you BEFORE you go and get the pump- which from what I understand, is irreversible….please make an appointment with a CERTIFIED IN DIABETES NUTRITIONIST- I went 2 weeks ago because I was uncontrolled–and she told me I wasn’t eating my foods correctly - meaning- you must eat a certain amount of protein, carb and fat at EACH meal with 3-4 hours inbetween with certain snacks. I feel like I’m 18 again, seriously, that is how much better I feel. Yes, your insurance will pay for the dietician if you have a slip from your doctor-and all doctors will write one because then you won’t be bothering them about mundane questions. Please take your latest blood tests with you — all tests- or she/he will order some for you. I found the hospital dieticians are not “motivated” enough to treat you the way you should, I was at 3 different dieticians in 3 different hospitals- and none of them helped me. Talk to HER/HIM about the need for a pump—you may and I hope for your sake, that you just need a change in your eating patterns to help you out—

I am a medical professional and I can honestly tell you that I was dumbfounded at all the things I was doing wrong for over 20 years and NO ONE bothered to explain the benefits and reasoning behind eating the correct foods together. I wasn’t able to lose weight for over 2 years…..I lost 1 1/2 lbs the first week and will continue on the program she has set for me…and I’m never hungry….. if you choose not to try this route, I would suggest you just “google” insulin pumps and you should get most of the info you need…..

Yes, I’m on well water in N. California.

I inherited 15 apple trees, 6 plum trees, 3 peach trees, 1 lemon tree, 1 tangerine tree, 1 apricot tree, about 18 grape vines (table grapes), 1 pear tree and some boysenberries when I moved in.

I added tomatoes, carrots, sugar peas, green beans, lettuce, cucumber, squash and bell pepper in my 30′ x 16′ garden.

We have a well, and we have a garden that we grow our veggies in. We live in Tennessee. I have town water for our house though. We grow, potatoes, tomatoes, corn, beans, cucumbers, squash, watermelon, cantalope, peas, peppers, beets, spinich, and cabbage.

Ideas wanted for Agricultural activities for Farmers’ Fair!?

Every year our FFA chapter takes part in the county Farmers’ Fair. This year we had the ideas of making popcorn on the cob and having an aquaculture display. It seems like drying out regular sweet corn doesn’t make popcorn? That’s what people are saying on yahoo, but where I work I’m almost positive they don’t grow a special brand of corn for popping.

In case the corn really doesn’t work, I would like to have some “back-up” plans. Does anyone have anything that would be a neat agricultural demonstration or display? Last year they did a hunting demonstration, so I don’t want to repeat that. Maybe something in farming?

Popcorn is indeed a different strain than sweet corn, so if you don’t have ears of popcorn already, that idea isn’t going to fly in most of N. America (where I presume you are since you say FFA) http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Maize

If you’re looking for something made with corn that people can sample, how about parched corn? (make it with sweet corn!)
http://www.ehow.com/how_2100129_make-par…
That’s an old-time recipe that makes a nutritious snack food — I’m really surprised it’s not more available.

What crops are grown in your area? Have you talked to the state and national crop associations for those crops?

If you do corn then why not get samples of as many different corn types as possible and make a display.
I bet most people would be surprised that flint, dent, sweet and popping corn are all different and look different.
You could show dried cobs as well as samples of the corn kernels.
I bet any produce would be happy to give you a bushel of corn for people to run their hand through.
If anybody in your area grows popping corn you could likely get that too.

How much time do you have? It would be really awesome if you could train an anima lto do some tricks maybe a sheep, a chicken, or a horse or something? That would be really awesome I would luv to see it and I’m in the FFA.

Vicodin makes my body hurt?

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

i just had a root canal yesterday. I took a vicodin and went to bed, at first it was okay but an hour later it felt like I had arthritis or something. It was horrible. My back hurt, my stomach hurt, it was worse than the tooth ache. Why is this happening? Is there any alternative to vicodin for my toothache?

did you take the vicodin on an empty or not full stomach? Bad idea…that makes your body feel horrible. It could also been the vicodin wearing off and you feeling pain from the root canal, which can in return make everything else hurt, if the problem persists and youre eating with the meds and you think thats it, call the dentist and have him give you something else, you could be allergic to it as well.(yes there are many alternatives to this medicine that work just as well)

……….

Advil works better on teeth than any narcotic. Ibprofin of any kind

Self-made tattoos?

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

I know a couple people who gave themselves tattoos, and even self pierced their tongue. I was wondering how you do that? And would it hurt more than going to a professional? And btw I’m not planning on doing it myself, I was just curious :)

I don’t know about piercings, have heard that some people do them with a sewing needle, but that’s about it. My ear, as a teen, I did by pushing a post earing through by hand (first heated over a flame then soaked & cleaned off in alcohol once it cooled). Never had one done pro, so I don’t know how that compares.

Many years ago, my first three tattoos were “home-made” without pro machines… I don’t recommend it, got really lucky myself, and they still looked very “ghetto”. Two of them are covered up now, (one of those I burned off first), and one is still awful, but I hardly ever see it myself.

The first, I did myself with a pin, wrapped with thread to hold ink & keep from going too far in. I don’t think it hurt much more than those with home-made “guns” or the later ones with pro machines, but it was a real risk. There is a difference, though, not only in quality and safety, but a decent machine (and a practiced hand) feels more like a scratch.

Where they are matters much more for how they feel… However, infections are far more uncomfortable and unpleasant, and you can’t really sterilize thread or a tube made of a plastic pen.

I also jumped off of a bridge back then, and don’t recommend that either. :)

………………

I have a friend who does very amazing tattoos yet he isn’t a professional tattoo artist. Some people are just talented and others just teach themselves. Personally, I wouldn’t advice anyone to do it themselves because of the risk of infections, or the tatt/piercing not looking as good as it would if they had gone to a professional shop.

………….

“How would you do that” would start with leaving your brain in a jar. Nobody not in prison & smart does this. The risks are so huge that my 4 year old nephew knows it’s a bad idea.

It’s also almost certainly more painful, and probably by a lot. Artists know how to minimize the pain - makes sense, they want you to come back for more and making it worse lessens that future business. Some random schmoe won’t know anything about that & just poke away.

……..

You should never get tattooed by people who are not working in shops, as there is a lot of sterilization involved in tattooing, that you cant get in a home. Same with piercing. Sure there are quite a few really good scratchers “non professional tattoo artists” out there who know sterilization, and are great artists. But they are few and far between

Boarding School

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Boarding schools have been around long enough yet they are more common in the west than in eastern countries. These schools are primarily set up to give, not only good education for their students, but also food and lodging. Most students who attend such educational institutions have to stay longer at school than at home. Most spend majority of their childhood and adolescent lives in these schools. When parents agree in such a setup, they are actually training their children, the earliest time possible, to be independent in all aspects. Most wealthy families send their children to such schools.

Teenagers (whether the behaved ones or the troublemakers) could definitely benefit from such a setup. For those who do not have any behavioral issues, a teen boarding school would suffice where they would be educated in preparation for their college lives.

Boot camps for teens, on the other hand, are there mainly to make right what could be a wrong adolescent period for most juvenile delinquents. This, of course, depends on how the parents view this type of setup. Boot camps teach discipline and respect for others which some teens could pick up and where others might not. Parents should be very careful in sending their children to such schools. They should first consult with a competent psychologist before actually enrolling their teens.

Free E-Filing of Federal Income Taxes

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

The burdens and costs of regular tax matters have been reduced considerably through the free filing system currently in place in the United States, especially after the signing of the Free File Tax Agreement between the Internal Revenue Service and Free tax File Alliance, LLC. The Free File Program, has since then been made available to the general public, as a more convenient means of handling federal income tax concerns.

This online service is free to eligible taxpayers – those with a 2007 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $54,000 or less. Should this amount be exceeded, there is usually a fee charged by the companies providing tax services in line with the Free File Program. There are, however, those who still offer such services for free. There are affiliate member-companies of the Free File Alliance LLC who offer a free federal tax filing based on your state of residence.

These online services are also supported by assistance from qualified professionals ready to answer questions, and there are a number of assistance centers to help those who are having difficulties in dealing with their tax returns. There is also a large number of available pamphlets, publications and materials all geared towards reducing the usual dilemmas associated with tax preparation procedures and filing. With this tool, moreover, the taxpayer is made aware of incentives such as tax credits or refunds which he might be entitled to.

Can someone give me advice on finding a good pair of running shoes?

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

I’ve been running since 2004, and I found a pair of running shoes that were perfect - New Balance. I ran a marathon in them last May, but since I got all the use out of them, I’ve tried buying other New Balance shoes (they dont’ seem to make that particular model anymore). I’ve purchased a few different pairs of New Balance and a pair of Nikes, but they are all too small for me now. I don’t understand it. They seemed to fit fine in the store, but after wearing them a few times, my toes are totally cramped in there. I’m 27 years old! Why would my feet be growing?? The 9 1/2 felt awkward and too big when I tried them on in the store. Should I just buy the 9 1/2 and wear thicker socks? It would be great if they made a 9 1/4! I think I might go to an actual running store this weekend and have someone help me, but whatever tips I can get here would be great

The best thing to do would go to be fitted at a running store. They can look at your foot type and depending on what it is recommend some shoes. One with a high-arch will most likely be in a neutral cushion running shoe (asics-Landreth, Nimbus/ Brooks-radius,glcerin/ New Balance- 1060,801/ Sucony- ride/ Mizuno- wave rider, wave creation) Someone with a mid to low arch will most likely be in a stability shoe. These shoes have more support and help to keep your arch from collapsing. (asics-2120, Kayano / Brooks-Adrenalin)

As for size, each shoe is different. You must feel comfortable and have about a thumbnail of room in the toe box. New Balance and Sucony shoes tend to run wide, while Mizuno and Nike shoes tend to run narrow.

Your running shoes tend to be exactly ONE whole size bigger than your normal dress shoes. Also your feet swell throughout the day so at different times your size will be different. It is best to try on shoes mid-day/afternoon

I work in a running specialty store and could go on for hours about shoes.

——–

Your feet do grow, and shoes change year-to-year, and new versions of a particular model. My feet have grown almost a full size in the last 10 years. I too stick with New Balance, but have had good luck in Brooks and Saucony.

As you suggested, DO go into a running shop, and have them check you out. Bring your old shoes. Some stores have some slick imaging equipment, and/or at the very least will be more thorough in selecting shoes appropriate for you. They’ll nail down your foot strike, measure both feet, etc.

You may spend a bit more, but it should be worth it. Also worth noting, some strores are pretty good about your satisfaction. My local store will allow you to return nearly any shoe.
